Memorial unveiled to fallen Staffords

MEMORIAL plaques have been unveiled to four members of the former Staffordshire Regiment killed in Iraq.

The Bishop of Lichfield, the Rt Rev Jonathan Gledhill led a service of remembrance for Armistice Day, Tuesday, at the Garrison Church of St Michael, in Tidworth Barracks, for members of the 3rd Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Staffords).

He also unveiled the plaques commemorating 2nd Lt Richard Shearer, Pte Phillip Hewett, Pte Leon Spicer and Pte Johnathon Danny Wysoczan.

Pte Wysoczan, aged 21 and from Biddulph, was shot on patrol in Basra in March 2007.

Ptes Spicer and Hewett and 2nd Lt Shearer were killed by a roadside bomb in the Maysan province in July 2005. Pte Hewett was 21 and from Tamworth, Pte Spicer 26 and from Tamworth, and 2nd Lt Shearer 26 and from Nuneaton

This was the last Armistice Day service for the Staffords in England as they are due to move to a new permanent base at Fallingbostel, Germany, in August next year.
