THE STABBED man found in a pool of blood in a quiet Lichfield cul-de-sac has been named as 44-year-old Mark Cannon.

A post-mortem examination revealed he died from a single stab wound to his neck.

The drama unfolded on Monday evening (September 29) when police officers and paramedics were called to the bloody scene in Burwaye Close at around 6.25pm as children played nearby.

Mr Cannon, who was of no fixed abode, was taken to Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield but died shortly afterwards.

Police arrested a 35-year-old woman at the scene. On Tuesday afternoon, she was sectioned under the Mental Health Act and is currently being treated at a specialist hospital where she will stay on police bail.

She had not been named by police at the time of going to press but has been identified locally as Nicki Saunders, who is believed to have previously lived with the victim at an address in the city.

Burwaye Close, a quiet cul-de-sac on a housing estate off The Friary, became the scene of an intense forensic investigation as it was closed off and scoured for evidence.

Cordons were expected to be lifted at the time of going to press.

Letters from the commander of Lichfield police, Inspector Jonathan Staite, were delivered to nearby homes stressing that the stabbing was an isolated incident.

It reads: "I understand this incident will cause concern locally and I want to reassure you that my officers are available for you to approach to discuss any issues or concerns you may have.

"The circumstance surrounding this incident are being investigated by police and I want to reassure you that police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this time."

Detectives from the force's major investigation department at Lichfield, are keen to build up a picture of Mark Cannon's movements in the hours leading up to his death.

They want to speak to anyone who knew him and saw him before the incident occurred.

Anybody with information should contact the incident room on 01785 234953 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
