Lichfield prepares for pancake day race

Monday, February 08, 2010, 09:00

THERE will be lots of pancake flipping fun for all the family to enjoy this year as Shrove Tuesday falls during school half-term.

Lichfield City Council is preparing for the celebrations on Tuesday, February 16 and will be holding three children's pancake races in Bore Street, as well as the usual men's, women's and mascots' races.

The Lichfield pancake races are a popular annual event in the city's calendar, with crowds gathering during the morning for the action at noon.

Competitors run from the St John Street end of Bore Street, down to the Guildhall, flipping their pancakes as they go.

Each year fleet-footed men and women battle to be first past the finish line, and spectators enjoy watching the mascots take part.

Three children's races will be featured this Shrove Tuesday, for youngsters aged six to eight, nine to 11, and 12 to 15.

Prizes will also be on offer to the race winners.

But there are limited places available so if you wish to take part, get your entries in to Kate Durrant at Lichfield City Council ASAP on the coupon provided on this page.

The deadline is next Monday, February 8.

■ Lichfield City Council would like to say a big thank you to Cafe Chicco, of Bore Street, which has agreed to supply pancakes on the day, and Robert Carr Jewellers and Salloways Jewellers for offering prizes.
