Hunt for information and ghosts at Handsacre pub
Ken Gardner and wife Doreen have just taken over The Crown Inn on The Green, near the Trent and Mersey Canal.
It is thought the pub dates back to the 16th century but Ken and Doreen, who already run another pub in Shenstone, are having trouble uncovering more details.
And they are particularly keen to see any old photographs of The Crown, both inside and out.
"We know the pub was built before the canal and we are fairly sure part of it dates back to Elizabethan times but we can't seem to find out much more about it," said Ken.
"The ghost is supposed to be an old canal boat worker and people have said that at times you can still smell the smoke from his pipe.
"I'm sure it's just an old wives' tale but every old pub should have its own ghost, so we won't be trying to get rid of him."
The pub closed on May 26 for owners Punch Taverns to carry out a £200,000 refurbishing programme.
"We will be keeping as many original features as possible," Ken added.
"It is a pub packed with history so the refurbishment will be very sensitive to that.
"We want to maintain the village pub atmosphere as well as making it easier for people using the canal to call in.
"I really think it's going to be a big boost to Handsacre and the area as a whole."
It is hoped the pub will open its door to the public at the beginning of July.
