SOUTH Staffordshire's 'super college' was launched this week with its Lichfield campus re-branded to carry the centre's new logo.

Opened to students for the first time as South Staffordshire College on Monday, January 5, the centre was created following a merger of Tamworth and Lichfield College with further education establishments in Cannock and Rodbaston.

"South Staffordshire College has a new identity and an enhanced vision of its future," explained Graham Morley, South Staffordshire's chief executive principal.

"We will create a vibrant institution that combines the strengths of our predecessors, and is better able to respond to the needs of individuals and employers within our communities."

The union of the three centres is set to revolutionise further education prospects for would-be students, offering prospective learners from age 14 upwards a range of courses at various educational levels that are unmatched in the area.

More than 20,000 courses will be available, delivered by 1,400 members of staff.

For businesses, the college will provide access to a 'skilled and enthusiastic pool' of potential employees. Staff will also work with employers to train existing workforces and help employees achieve their full potential.

Each of the four campuses carry its own specialism – Tamworth with business services and technology; Lichfield with the arts; Cannock with vocational learning and Rodbaston with agriculture and construction.

And students are already recognising the benefits.

Robert Scully and Leanne Beacham, who are both studying for a BTEC National Diploma in sport, said: "The teaching and equipment facilities for sports education is what really attracted us to this college.

"There are great opportunities to get a really broad sports education."

Stephanie Smith, who is working towards a BTEC National Certificate in travel and tourism, agreed.

She said: "The college gives me the opportunity to learn about the tourist industry as well as train to be cabin crew.

"The course is really different in that you can get two qualifications at the end of two years."
