A NOTORIOUS Cannock beggar been sentenced to four months imprisonment for breaching his anti-social behaviour order.

Russell Samuels, of Melbourne Crescent in Heath Hayes was handed the sentence after appearing at Cannock Magistrates' Court last Thursday (May 21).

The 40-year-old was arrested on Wednesday after concerns from local residents that Samuels had been begging in the area.

PC 4558 Dean Cooper, neighbourhood beat officer for Heath Hayes and Wimblebury said: "Residents have been concerned about Samuels' actions for the past four years and last April he was given a two-year ASBO which stated that he must not beg across the county.

"This was breached and last November he received a four month prison sentence, suspended for two years."

And recently officers had received further reports that Samuels was once again asking local shoppers and residents for money

"Residents have reported their concerns to us and many people have felt intimidated when approached by Samuels – although we have not received reports that he has threatened local residents.

"We would like to reassure residents that we take quality of life issues very seriously and are working hard to make sure that the area remains a safe and pleasant place to work and live."

He added: "We hope this serves as a warning that the police and courts will respond to concerns of this nature and take appropriate action."
